Camille Ross is a visionary photographer and a narrative artist. Her work is rarely summed up as autonomous imagery, instead her projects are visual narratives focused upon various topics, styles of photography and subject matter. Each image is contingent on the next which culminates in compelling bodies of work that inspire and transport the viewer into her myriad universes of process based storytelling. In this series Camille traces the roots of her Native American heritage where in her research she discovered that her great grandmother and all of her siblings were once Cherokee slaves. Camille blends Native American storytelling and Jungian archetypes to further explore her dreams and her heritage.

In a tiny village in India where there are more elephants than people, the residents gather every year to celebrate their icons who they revere more than any other gods. The elephants are adorned with wreaths and wreaths of sacred flowers like marigolds, orchids, carnations and gardenias so they will all smell heavenly. The people pose with the elephants who they consider sacred and healing and equal to all the other gods and deities they pray to. The people pose for photographs and paintings that they then hang in their honor in their homes. They believe that elephants bring good fortune and luck. Some believe they bring love. Nearby villages are not envious or mean spirited instead they are curious and often attend the yearly ritual. All the elephants who live there roam freely on the grass near all the homes and all the motorists abide by the signs in the road that have a symbol for elephants crossing. It’s been said that this village has lived in peace and in excellent health and all villagers are blessed with bountiful crops and live self sufficiently off the land as they are vegetarians. Most of the elephants have names. The babies are cared for by all the mothers in the herds and the males spend the day gathering weeds and treats of bananas and mango that the farmers  all save for them. The elephants and the people of the village all live past 100 years old with no health problems and there’s only one doctor in the village who is an eccentric woman who adorns her own elephant who she named Shanti as it means Peace with wreaths of flowers all year round. They walk side by side to the surgery every morning and Shanti grazes on the grass until she gets bored then she goes to visit her aunts and uncle’s and sisters and brothers and other friends since her parents passed on. Every day village is peaceful and content as are all the cats and dogs because it’s rumored to be that the elephants protect them from harm just as they do with all the villagers. Visitors love seeing the fields and fields of flowers growing in the spring and early summer alongside of beautiful summer squash and rows and rows of green kale and cantaloupe. The trees grow heavy with mangoes in the summer, there’s so many that the villagers collectively decided to give them to the elephants and rest they use for an exotic tincture that sells for millions of dollars making each and every villager very wealthy. Every day in the village after lunch time and a following nap time before the villagers return to work, they pray and are allowed to ask the elephants for one wish a day. The wishes can be for rain when it’s too hot before the monsoon season, or they can be for a personal matter such as finding love and marriage or getting blessed with a child, or for having any one wish granted. These photographs are of the sacred festival where the villagers celebrate and give prayers of gratitude for this wonderful place they live and for the bountiful harvest they receive every year. The elephants show their love by never leaving and protecting the village and all its people which they do with grace and joy in their hearts every day in every year. Each villager has a family portrait or a single portrait if the villager’s live alone. People come from all over the world to visit and to try the highly sought after mango tinctures and of course to see the elephants on display in the parade for the annual festival. It’s been said that the few people who’ve actually made it there to the village and spent time with the elephants have all been blessed with good fortune, good health and good luck and even love.

This is taken from previously published content on my work: My work is in part a survey of the American Southwest, as I traveled through it and photographed the Copper mining communities, Silver and Yellowcake mining communities throughout Arizona, New Mexico, West Texas and the Mercury mines of Terlingua in South Texas. This project was supported in part by the Tucson Council on the Arts and takes the viewer on a visual journey of the Southwest and document’s some of the most beautiful desert landscape’s, and compelling social documentary work of the Southwest’s inhabitant’s and serves as a creative documentary, fine art photography, conceptual photography. Part travelogue, part journey into a unique region of America also deeply impacted by global warming, wild fires, severe heat and draught effecting it’s inhabitant’s and further adding to the complexities of survival in this region of America where Camille lived for most of her adult life. In fact she lived for a decade in the Gila Wilderness of New Mexico where she insists that just opening the door to her beautiful property was like stepping inside of a stunning outdoor living virtual studio as evidenced by her breathtaking images (“The Secret Life Of The Desert Ecosystem) where Camille actually made the images in response to the epic regional ongoing draught, where to emphasize the secret ecosystem’s urgent necessity for water so that the complex waterways beneath the earth can function as it is is the key to understanding this fragile, complex yet due to the severity of global warming, there is a looming threat to these fragile life systems who call the underbelly of the earth home.

Previously published volumes of my work were published by Art On World in February of 2022. “Camille’s stunning desert scapes with seemingly large adjacent reflecting pools of water, (the water is actually magically added, so all of the the dramatic desert and sky scapes are in actuality bare). By adding the reflections of water one is reminded of life beneath the earth’s core, the secret life of the desert eco system, and the dramatic yet static beauty of the rugged, still landscapes that without the mirroring effects of the earth reflecting it’s projected imagined beauty back to the viewer that invokes nature’s way of narcissus from greek mythology, which is why the work is so powerful. The desert floor may seem to indicate that there is no more life there, instead it is full of life systems and multiple underwater tunnels containing myriad living creatures who depend on rain water that saturates the earth and seeps into the ground to sustain abundant lifecycles. Yet with years and years of draught these fragile life systems are threatened to looming extinction. The myriad under earth living beings from otters to reptiles and beyond are so rich and their lives are so complex and dependent on water to sustain them. With over a thousand different species living beneath the earth’s core these inhabitant’s, much like human’s are dependent on water to survive and some of my work in this region emphasizes the socioeconomic and environmental challenges endemic to this segment of the America’s. As the planet continues to heat up and temperatures are on the rise everywhere there is an urgency for action like never before.

Forced pregnancy of children 

This work addresses the darkness surrounding what a Trump presidency would mean for women, more specifically for children who are the victims of sexual assault, more specifically rape and incest and forced to carry their pregnancies to term which at its heart is about the enslavement of women and children and what a dangerous country America will be for women and girls if Trump were to win the election which we cannot allow to happen. Period.

This is the hardest work I’ve ever made in my career because it’s an issue I care so very deeply about, a women’s right to choose, especially for girls and women who have had no choice when they were the victims of sexual assault. But the subtext, even the text equates to a modern day enslavement of women and a very dangerous one with its broader significance situating women and violated children at risk for human slavery and human trafficking and rendering them powerless. It’s such a painful trajectory that as I write this and use my art as a vehicle for advocacy the images are deeply upsetting. The sheer horror of this potentiality is astoundingly barbaric and America would not survive it, more specifically women and children would not survive it. Slavery kills the spirit and this is my greatest fear.

While this work is terribly controversial it is an eminent discussion on what may become of America for women and girls in only thirty days.

Due to the urgency of this potential I felt it was important to make this work. America is at its breaking point! Kamala Harris must win! We must help her to do so.

Born in San Francisco, California 1964 Camille was raised between Rural Mississippi and Berkeley, California, which in part informed her vision. Her childhood was one of observer, of a stark chasm and duality among Anglo White Culture in contrast to African American and Native American cultural segregation.

This Body of Work in the West was supported in part by the Tucson Council on the Arts and takes the viewer on a tour of Migrant Miners, Immigrants and those who inhabit the landscape of the Copper Corridor and Yellow Cake mining districts throughout the Southwest, including Arizona and New Mexico where Camille lived for many years. The photographs explore the effects of extreme heat endemic to both person and place among the sparse expansions of wild desert. Camille photographs this sparse existence and frames each image in haunting isolation. Many of these photographs were softly painted in sepia brush strokes to accentuate the heat which for most of each year is often so unbearable it becomes surreal.
Camille is a graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art, she is an activist, exhibiting artist and photographic educator. She is the recipient of several grants including the New Mexico Council on Photography, the Tucson Council on the Arts and the International Women's Foundation in Marfa, Texas.

She has photographed the three adjoining deserts from the Mojave to the Sonoran and then finally the Chihuahua Desert.

I've been photographing this tribe in Paloma's, Mexico, which is a small Border Town below Colombus, New Mexico.  The members of this tribe still dress in traditional clothing which is all hand sewn, and colorful as you can see. Many of the women sew and embroider beautiful quilts that are very intricate, vibrant and very beautiful. Each time I go to Paloma's I often see the same family's and they are very gracious, allowing me to photograph them more as I get to know them, however the women and children are generally more open to being photographed than the men in this tribe. I've grown closer to these families in the past year or two and I'm hoping they will continue to extend their gracious acceptance of allowing me to photograph this most beautifully preserved Indian tribe and their traditions. All Rights Reserved ©2017 Registered Images Library of Congress

Every Street, Walkway & Village Road Are Beautifully Decorated In Gorgeous Flowers From A Million Petals, Creating Beautiful Geometrical Designs That Look Like Mandala’s Of Petals Formed Into Gorgeous Installations. In The YouTube Video Of This Sacred Festival, There Is A Marching Band & The Entire Village Tributes An Homage To The Saint’s In This Beautiful Celebration. Catskill’s Romance With The Simple Thing’s.

I’m fascinated by the ways in which male police culture criminalizes Women as pathological, being’s, which I’m sure many from this series of found and appropriated photograph’s are. Though many images are of women sex worker’s, I wanted to restore each women’s dignity and identity by adding makeup and color to individuate the women so they wouldn’t disappear into the problematic and often corrupt criminal justice system in America, where women are notoriously violated and perpetually unsafe. Most of the images are American, though some are British and many are Australian of course.

I also struggle as a woman from the horrific “suicide” of Sandra Bland and Countless other women often arrested for traffic violation’s, which we’ve seen time and time again in the horrifying police brutality we’ve now seen time and time again, too many horrific episodes to count! Breonna Taylor is another murder by the hands of the yet another compromised police department in Louisville, Kentucky. There’s been so many incident’s of police brutality and horror that not only has the public lost all trust in the institution of modern American police work, I as well as a dark brow Native American woman have not only lost all faith in them, unfortunately I was racially profiled by a young White cop and arrested and spect a night in jail for being one day late on my registration! I had just purchased a new car and because my mother was sick with cancer I wasn’t sure if I was going to remain in the state I currently lived in then, or if I would have to move back to California to help her, which I ended up doing, but I want to point out that I had never even had a speeding ticket in my entire life, I was a 54 year old yoga studio owner and teacher and an artist. I was a long time volunteer at a local museum where I was sentenced to 500 hourse of community service at a museum I volunteered at for three years already. I was held without bail! This is how egregiously sick modern day policing is. What’s worse is that I was thrown in a cell with a man! Then later with four other lovely women all of whom were just like me, we were arrested without the possibility of bail for minor traffic violations! One woman had a cracked head light and didn’t even know it! I’d like to point out that one of the most painful accounts of police brutality if one can even begin to compare each horrific account from the next was for me in Memphis when Tyre Nichols. His disgusting, repugnant murderer’s, all but one of them African American, the hardest part of this story was the most heinous of all and please keep in mind, I’m a civil liberties activist. I’m the granddaughter of a biracial leftist civil rights couple, activism is in my blood. When Trayvon Martin was murdered, I felt as if I had witnessed a modern day lynching, which is exactly what it was! I contacted attorney Benjamin Crump and spent hours on the phone with him and his staff because I could not wrap my brain around what had transpired. Ben actually asked me to share my very strong letter of activism regarding my feelings that this case was about specifically the ‘maligning of African American’s”, which is exactly what it was. Now, look at the horror’s that have since unfolded, this coupled with the myriad mass shootings, there is a serious problem in this country that is so far beyond repair I fear that I often think of leaving the country for good, even though I am a true American, the violence in this country has become so severe and yet the far right MAGA extremist’s want to make the AR15 a symbol on the American flag. This country may no longer represent my core values, which are non violent Quaker values. I will add that after my own brush with police incompetence bordering and brutality since they threw me in a cell with a man, I called the FBI and had a fabulous agent meet me with me because I was traumatized, very traumatized and she conducted a full blown investigation into the infamously troubled State Police where I lived who were already being invested for several other very serious transgression’s. Then I had my friend’s at the ACLU do a full scale investigation of the jail, they too were cited for multiple violations. As my dear friend Bill of the ACLU had the best joke in the world about putting a liberal in jail but I can’t remember it, I’ll post it later if I think of it. There is something profoundly wrong in this country not only with the American Police Force, who by the way are so heavily militarized now, more than half of them especially those cops who kill, are Vet’s from the Gulf and the Middle East who have untreated PTSD and the only work they can get and we are now discovering, they are the worst candidates for is policing work. The overt militarization of the police really began after these Vet’s returned home and could only get work in this field, while never being appropriately screened and treated for PTSD, they were and some still are ‘killing machine’s” just look at the heavily armored police vehicle’s since post 9/11, especially between the years of 2004 up until now, this type of police car is now the standard “police work” became normalized and is currently the status quo.

I enhanced these images and accentuated one’s that appear to have an underlying theme of mental illness, another reason women are incarcerated, rather than treated. On the humorous side, I fell in love with many of their names, Birtha Mayhem, and Bubble’s MaGoo! The images made me very curious about their lives, about domestic abuse where women have been forced to take protective measures in their own hands especially when these images were taken, as mostly all domestic violence cases were dismissed completely and most of the survivor’s were labeled as histrionic and hysterical, and some shot their husband’s in utter self defense. I wanted to give these women the dignified formal portraits they deserve.

In the iconographies we encounter in the pages of the book we notice how the little considered across all ethnic groups, the chase for eternal youth, exaggerated beauty, lead to the death of the self. Thus a lack of self-regard is accentuated. A catalytic and provocative element naturally prevails in these works, which is respect for the human being. Her works refer us to sociology, to the history of man and his existence.

This is an homage to my Godfather, John Miller. I spent an entire year on the road setting out to photograph the American West with only my camera, a few bags of clothes a tiny amount of money and a copy of Blue Highway’s the beautiful book by a much underrepresented Native American author that my beautiful Godfather gave me bc he believed in me and my work more than any other person in my life, we would have Sunday wine nights where we’d each by a bottle or three and I’d tell him about all my adventures through the Copper Corridor and Yellow Cake mining communities in Arizona where it would be a thousand degrees and I had my old 1991 silver Trooper that had no ac but carried me through my epic journey of a lifetime and soon to be published in my first book as soon as I get my horrendous spinal surgery behind me bc I broke my back on this same journey at an artist residency which disabled me for the past 15 years but my beautiful godfather who btw was one of the Original Beatnik’s and lived in Morocco and was friends with William Burroughs and also smoked opium with author Paul Bowls while he lived as a bisexual beautiful human being for many years after the war where he was stationed in Africa where he had a possy of wild wounded animals who he always used to tell me about but because he had so many wild stories I figured he made it up until one night we were in his studio where he hung his famous billboard of everyone he loved including me at 31 when we all took a family boat trip across the bay we are all from San Francisco. John Miller, RIP my most beloved godfather of all time actually had on his billboard a picture of all the wounded animals that sure enough lived with him in Africa, they included a tiger with a missing paw, a golden eagle with a missing wing, a hyena so beaten up she could no longer fight, and the list continues but this is the story of my most beloved soul, this man knew me since I was in the womb and because I had the misfortune of having a drunken biological father who never had the empathy or humanity to acknowledge my existence, John Miller stepped into my life and Never stepped out and I was like one of his wounded animals who he nurtured and cared for and gave them and myself a home and brought them back to life, as he honored me, my life and my work, we remained close our entire lives! I love you 💕 forever John Miller! You are so greatly missed.
